Why one should keep uncut hairs? Why do SIKHS keep 'Long Uncut Hair' tied into a coil or knot? Why SIKHS wear a Turban? Spiritual Technology explains it all

Article from Sikh Dharma International

From the time of the first Sikh Master, Guru Nanak Ji, wearing a turban was part of the unique spiritual path that would become Sikh Dharma. Guru Nanak Ji, himself, wore a turban and asked his students (followers) to do so as well.

For thousands of years, in many different spiritual traditions, the turban served a unique and universal purpose. It assisted a person to experience, integrate and maintain their highest consciousness throughout the day.

How does the turban work? The top of the head, the place where babies have their "soft spot," is called the Tenth Gate (Dasam Duar). In yogic terms, it is also known as the Crown Chakra. Thousands of years ago, yogis and spiritual seekers discovered that the hair on the top of the head protects the tenth gate from sun and exposure. In addition, the hair acts as antennae, channeling the energy and life-force of the sun into the body and brain.

To amplify the effect, spiritual seekers would coil or knot their hair at the tenth gate - also called the solar center of the head. In men, the solar center is on top of the head at the front (anterior fontanel). Women have two solar centers: one is at the center of the crown chakra, the other is on top of the head towards the back (posterior fontanel). For men and women, coiling or knotting the hair at the solar centers focuses the energy and helps retain a spiritual vibration throughout the day.

This hair knot (known as the joora) is traditionally called the "rishi" knot. In ancient times, a rishi was someone who had the capacity to control the flow of energy and prana in the body. A "maharishi" was someone who could regulate the flow of energy in the body, meditatively and at will. The rishi knot assists in the channeling of energy in meditation (Naam Simran). If one cuts off the hair, there can be no rishi knot. By giving us the rishi knot and the turban, the Sikh Masters shared a very ancient technology for how an ordinary person can develop the capacity of a rishi.

The next step after tying a rishi knot is to put on a turban. The turban covers the coiled, uncut hair. The pressure of the multiple wraps keeps the 26 bones of the head in place and activates pressure points on the forehead that keep a person calm and relaxed. Turbans cover the temples, which is said to help protect a person from the mental or psychic negativity of other people. The pressure of the turban also changes the pattern of blood flow to the brain. When you tie up your hair and wrap the turban around it, all the parts of your skull are pulled together and supported. You feel clarity and readiness for the day and for what may come to you from the Unknown.

The Divine Energy that governs the Universe and guides our own life is mostly unknown to us. Living with an awareness of that Divine Energy within oneself and the entire creation allows us to live our highest potential. Wearing the turban helps us experience that Divine Energy and to remember there is something greater than what we know. It is a spiritual practice where we take the highest, most visible part of ourselves and show that it belongs to the Creator. Wearing the turban also helps cultivate a sense of surrender to the Divine.

The turban is the Guru's gift to us. It is how we crown ourselves as people of Universal Consciousness who sit on the throne of commitment to our own higher Self. For men and women alike, this projective identity conveys royalty, grace, and uniqueness. It is a signal to others that we live in the image of Infinity and are dedicated to serving all. The turban represents complete commitment.
If you are finding some silver strands in your hair, be aware that the silver or white color increases the vitamins and energy flow to compensate for aging.  For better brain health as you age, try to keep your hair as natural and healthy as you can.

Yogi Bhajan from USA, an established authority on meditation and yoga taught that in order to sustain oneself in the face of all environmental pressure, you need very strong nerves.  If your nervous system holds steady you won’t fall apart.   All your behavior:  your patience, projection, constant going and working, depends on your nerves.  What builds and maintains your nerves?  The electrical charge of the body nourishes your nervous system which is controlled by the brain, but it is your hair that gives you that electrical energy. In Yogi Bhajan’s words, “your hair is not there by mistake. It has a definite purpose, which saints will discover and other men will laugh at.”

The molecular structure of your hair contains three things:

Your genetic material, your minerals and it is actually the only part of you that contains an imprint of your life journey, your psychological destination.  Indian doctors can read your life from your hair as you can read the history of a tree from its rings when cut.  Just as the rings of the tree give a glimpse into the history of the tree. In India, ayurvedic doctors  use a special system of stretching the wet hairs which they take from your comb,  From this system they can write down your whole history and give you the most accurate diagnosis. Today in the west, the science of hair analysis is used to diagnose the state of a person’s nutritional health.

Try An Experiment

Whatever hair you have now, try an experiment, and see if you can tie it up on the top of your head, coiling it if it has any length. Then cover and secure it tightly with a cotton handkerchief or a silk scarf and see if you can slightly pull up the scalp holding the 26 bones of the skull gently in place.  This will give you extra energy for athletic competition, yoga and meditationYogi Bhajan felt this was an important component in his invincibility on the football field as a youth.   If you do not contain the movement of your cranial bones, and their adjustment shifts suddenly, you can become more emotional and conflicted

How was the world created? Sikhism on Creation of Universe & Grandeur of Human Birth

How was the world created?

According to Sikhism, God existed all alone in His abstract form - Nirgun - before He created the Universe. This may be called the state of precreation. God was in the state of sunn samadhi or primal void = state of pre-creation, state of contemplation of the void.

According to Guru Nanak, there was darkness and chaos for millions of years. There was only God and nothing else - no mists, no clouds, no vapours, nothing. None existed except God.

GURU NANAK JI SAYS:
"There was darkness for countless years.
There was neither earth nor sky; there was only His Will.
There was neither day nor night, neither sun nor moon.
He (God) was in deep meditation.
There was nothing except Himself."
(SGGS p1035)

Guru Amar Das, the third Nanak further clarifies and reinforces this concept in the following lines found in the Guru Granth Sahib:

He created Himself - at that time, there was no other.
He consulted Himself for advice, and what He did came to pass.
At that time, there were no Akaashic Ethers, no nether regions, nor the three worlds.
At that time, only the Formless Lord Himself existed - there was no creation.
As it pleased Him, so did He act; without Him, there was no other. ||1||"
(SGGS p509)

Then God willed the creation of the universe. He became manifest: Sargun. He diffused Himself in nature. Guru Nanak says:

"Thou created all Thy Universe to please Thyself, to enjoy the spectacle, the reality, which is the light of Thy own Reality-self.

Facts on Universe : Sikhism confirmed amazing facts 500 hundred years ago

The Sikhs, founder Guru Nanak Ji early stated in the Guru Granth Sahib some 500 years ago, much before any scientist dreamt of attempting to have confirmed so:

ਤਿਥੈ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਥੈ ਅੰਤ ਅੰਤ
"There are planets, solar systems and galaxies.
If one speaks of them, there is no limit and no end."
The top line is the original text in Gurmukhi recited by Guru Nanak
in about 1499 found in the Sikh holy scripture called the Guru Granth Sahib

“Many millions are the moons, suns and stars” (SGGS Ang / Page 275).

The Living Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is referred as SGGS. The Sikh scriptures have said great many things about the Universe. However, although Gurbani has been in existence since about 1499 and the Guru Granth Sahib has been the Guru of the Sikh since 1708, the world has not been listening. It is clear that there is very little that the world has learnt from the important points mentioned in the Sikh holy text regarding the cosmos.

Carl Sagan (1934 – 1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He was the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University. He was a consultant and adviser to NASA since the 1950's and briefed the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon.

This is what Carl Sagan, wrote in his book the Pale Blue Dot:

"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant'? Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.' A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the Universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths."

Well! The holy Granth of the Sikhs has said all these amazing things about the cosmos.

What Gurbani says?

Guru Granth Sahib Ji states that, “There are planets, solar systems and galaxies. If one speaks of them, there is no limit, no end. There are worlds upon worlds of His Creation. As He commands, so they exist. He watches over all, and contemplating the creation, He rejoices. Nanak says, to describe this is as hard as steel!” (SGGS p8).

Despite this fact being clearly stated in the Guru Granth Sahib some 500 years ago, most of humanity is not aware of these sayings. Guru Nanak was an exceptional visionary and was responsible for bring some amazing ideas to the world.

The Guru Granth Sahib  say that the universe consists of many different bodies including planets, solar systems galaxies, stars, suns, skies, etc and that the scale and extent of these bodies is unknown and that there is no end to their number. It is clear from this that probable size of the universe is beyond an exact evaluation or calculation by the human mind.

The holy text continues to state: "The limits of the created universe cannot be perceived. Its limits here and beyond cannot be perceived. Many struggle to know His limits, but His limits cannot be found. No one can know these limits. The more you say about them, the more there still remains to be said." (SGGS p5).

"All are in the One, and the One is in all." (SGGS p907). So the Universe is a manifestation of the Lord; He is found within the Universe. So from this we can see the extent of God as portrait by Sikhism.

Furthermore, it is stated that God created the whole universe including the earth: You Yourself created the earth, and the two lamps of the sun and the moon” (SGGS p83); "He creates planets, solar systems and galaxies;" (SGGS p1162).
