How was the world created?
According to Guru Nanak, there was darkness and chaos for millions of years. There was only God and nothing else - no mists, no clouds, no vapours, nothing. None existed except God.
GURU NANAK JI SAYS:
"There was darkness for countless years.
There was neither earth nor sky; there was only His Will.
There was neither day nor night, neither sun nor moon.
He (God) was in deep meditation.
There was nothing except Himself." (SGGS p1035)
Guru Amar Das, the third Nanak further clarifies and reinforces this concept in the following lines found in the Guru Granth Sahib:
He created Himself - at that time, there was no other.
He consulted Himself for advice, and what He did came to pass.
At that time, there were no Akaashic Ethers, no nether regions, nor the three worlds.
At that time, only the Formless Lord Himself existed - there was no creation.
As it pleased Him, so did He act; without Him, there was no other. ||1||" (SGGS p509)
Then God willed the creation of the universe. He became manifest: Sargun. He diffused Himself in nature. Guru Nanak says:
"Thou created all Thy Universe to please Thyself, to enjoy the spectacle, the reality, which is the light of Thy own Reality-self.

प्रिथमै सासि न मास सनि अंध धुंध कछु खबरि न पाई ।
First of all, when no breath and body was there nothing was visible in the pitch darkness.

रकति बिंद की देहि रचि पंचि तत की जड़ित जड़ाई ।
The body was created through the blood(of mother) and semen (of father) and the five elements were joined judiciously.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੋ ਚਉਥੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ।
Paoun Paanee Baisantaro Chauthee Dharatee Sangi Milaaee.
पउण पाणी बैसंतरो चउथी धरती संगि मिलाई ।
Air, water, fire and earth was put together.
3 ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ : ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੨ ਪੰ. ੩
ਪੰਚਮਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਕਾਸ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਛਟਮੁ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਸਮਾਈ।
Panchami Vichi Aakaasu Kari Karataa Chhatamu Adisatu Samaaee.
पंचमि विचि आकासु करि करता छटमु अदिसटु समाई ।
The fifth element sky (void) was kept in between and creator God, the sixth one, invisibly permeated among all.

ਪੰਚ ਤਤ ਪੰਚੀਸ ਗੁਨਿ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਬਣਾਈ।
Panch Tat Pancheesi Gouni Satr Mitr Mili Dayhi Banaaee.
पंच तत पंचीसि गुनि सत्र मित्र मिलि देहि बणाई ।
To create the human body, five elements and twenty five qualities opposite to each other were joined and mixed.
5 ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ : ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੨ ਪੰ. ੫
ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਵਾਗਉਣੁ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਖਾਈ।
Khaanee Baanee Chalitu Kari Aavaa Gaounu Charit Dikhaaee.
खाणी बाणी चलितु करि आवा गउणु चरित दिखाई ।
Four life originating mines (egg foetus sweat born , vegetation) and four speeches(para, pasyanti, madhyama, vaikhari) were assimilated into each other and the drama of transmigration was enacted.

Of the eighty four lacs life classes / forms of living beings, birth as a human is the best.

Eyes behold, ears listen to and the mouth speaks sweet words.

ਹਥੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲਿ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲੇਹੀ।
Hathee Kaar Kamaavanee Pairee Chali Satisangi Milayhee.
हथी कार कमावणी पैरी चलि सतिसंगि मिलेही ।
Hands earn livelihood and feet take towards the holy congregation.
3 ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ : ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੩ ਪੰ. ੩
ਕਿਰਤਿ ਵਿਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਲਣੁ ਕਾਰਿ ਕਰੇਹੀ।
Kirati Virati Kari Dharam Dee Khati Khavaalanu Kaari Karayhee.
किरति विरति करि धरम दी खटि खवालणु कारि करेही ।
In human life alone by the rightful earning, out of one's savings, other needy ones are fed.
4 ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ : ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੩ ਪੰ. ੪
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਕਾਰਥਾ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਪੜਿ ਸਮਝਿ ਸੁਣੇਹੀ।
Guramoukhi Janamu Sakaaradaa Gurabaanee Parhhi Samajhi Sounayhee.
गुरमुखि जनमु सकारथा गुरबाणी पड़्हि समझि सुणेही ।
Man by becoming gurmukh- Guru oriented, makes his life meaningful; he reads Gurbani and makes others understand (the importance of) bani.
5 ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ : ਵਾਰ ੧ ਪਉੜੀ ੩ ਪੰ. ੫
ਗੁਰਭਾਈ ਸੰਤੁਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਰਣਾਮਿਤੁ ਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਿਵੇਹੀ।
Gurabhaaee Santousati Kari Charanaamrit Lai Moukhi Pivayhee.
गुरभाई संतुसटि करि चरणाम्रित लै मुखि पिवेही ।
He satisfies his companions and takes the holy water touched by their feet i.e. he inculcates complete humility.

ਪੈਰੀ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰੇਹੀ।
Pairee Pavanu N Chhodeeai Kalee Kaali Raharaasi Karayhee.
पैरी पवणु न छोडीऐ कली कालि रहरासि करेही ।
Humbly touching of the feet should not be repudiated because in the dark age, this quality is the only asset (of the human personality).

People of such a conduct will swim the world-ocean and also get along other disciples of the Guru.
